VILLA A: A Testament to Latvian Design Excellence

Santa Meikulane's Award-Winning Residential Masterpiece

Set against the backdrop of the ancient Gauja river valley in Latvia, VILLA A is a residential house that embodies the spirit of global creativity. Designed by Santa Meikulane, this holiday home is a testament to the power of design that respects and enhances its natural surroundings. With its unique properties and innovative realization technology, VILLA A has not only made a mark in Latvia but also on the global stage, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019.

The inspiration for VILLA A was drawn from the belief that creativity without borders is the new reality of our time. This belief is reflected in every aspect of the design, from its form to its function. The design of the house is a tribute to the unique relief of the Gauja river valley, with each view of the building offering a different perspective.

The house's unique properties are a result of a careful balance between design and technology. The lowest level, invisible from the roadside, houses leisure and sauna premises, a wine cellar, and a spacious terrace with a swimming pool. The entrance level features a large living room with a kitchen, fireplace, and two guest bedrooms. The private quarters of the house owner, including an office and a spacious bedroom, are located on a concrete bridge that encompasses the two-floor-high living room.

Despite the extensive use of glass, VILLA A adheres to low-energy principles. This is achieved through its compact size, virtually secluded northern façade, minimal exterior surface for reducing heat loss, and extensive glazing on the southern and western sides to capture the sun. The solar thermal collectors on the roof further contribute to reducing the building's energy consumption.

The interior of VILLA A maintains the building's ascetic image with rough concrete plates and extensive glazing. The natural oak surfaces and carefully designed elements such as the fireplace slab and the ornamental metal stairs add a touch of coziness. The combination of inbuilt lighting fixtures offers countless lighting scenarios, which can be easily controlled by a smartphone, thanks to the application of smart house principles.

VILLA A is a shining example of Latvian design that is good enough for the world. It is a testament to the power of design that respects and enhances its natural surroundings. With its unique properties and innovative realization technology, VILLA A has not only made a mark in Latvia but also on the global stage, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019.
